In a significant step to boost tourism and simplify travel, New Zealand has announced the launch of a 12-month trial offering visa-free entry to Chinese nationals traveling from Australia. Beginning in November 2025, Chinese citizens holding valid visitor, work, student, or family visas for Australia will be able to visit New Zealand for up to three months without the need for a traditional visa. Instead, they will be required to obtain a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA), simplifying the entry process and providing greater convenience.
This trial is expected to strengthen the relationship between New Zealand and China, enhancing tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. By allowing Chinese nationals to visit both countries on a single trip, New Zealand aims to encourage regional tourism and create seamless connections between the two nations.
Eligibility for the Visa-Free Entry Program
The visa-free entry policy applies exclusively to Chinese nationals already residing in Australia with a valid visa. This includes those with visitor, work, student, or family visas. The introduction of this policy will reduce the bureaucratic hurdles typically associated with obtaining a visa, making it easier for eligible travelers to explore New Zealand.
Instead of applying for a traditional visa, eligible travelers will simply need to secure an NZeTA. This digital travel authorization will allow visitors to stay in New Zealand for up to three months, offering a more streamlined and efficient process for short-term stays.

- Establishment of Support Centers in China: Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is setting up support centers in China to assist travel agents, ensuring that Chinese tourists have access to the information and resources they need.
- Simplified Online Content: The Immigration New Zealand website will be updated with more accessible, user-friendly content in Chinese, allowing travelers to find relevant information easily.
- Relaxed Document Translation Requirements: New rules mean that visitor visa applicants no longer need to have their documents officially translated or certified, which will save both time and money, especially for Chinese visitors.
Changes to Transit Visas for Chinese Nationals
In addition to the visa-free entry for tourists, New Zealand has announced that starting in November 2025, Chinese passport holders will no longer need a Transit Visa when passing through New Zealand. Instead, they will be able to use an NZeTA for transit, streamlining the process for travelers moving between China and other international destinations.
A major example of this change will be the launch of a new China Eastern Airlines route in December 2025, connecting Shanghai Pudong Airport to Buenos Aires Ezeiza Airport, with a stopover in Auckland. As the only New Zealand airport with a designated transit area, this change will be especially beneficial for Chinese travelers, enabling them to easily transit through New Zealand without the need for a separate visa.
